Does my use of this survey tool require IRB review?
According to federal law, any survey used for research involving human subjects needs prior approval from the IRB.
The IRB is charged with facilitating research while protecting human subjects.
Research in this setting is defined as information gathering with the intent to develop general conclusions or knowledge that can be generalized. The people you send this survey link to would meet the definition of human subjects. If you meet the definition for research and plan to use this survey tool you must complete either a Research Determination Form or IRB application found on the IRB website, BEFORE you disseminate your survey.
Furthermore, publication of results or presentation outside of the classroom setting is often used as a measure of whether data is generalizable. If the data collected via this survey tool is intended for publication or presentation purposes you are required to complete a Research Determination Form or fill out a new IRB application. Publications may include: masters thesis; doctoral thesis; journals; presentation at conferences.
Note 1 - even if you do not plan to publish the information now, if there is even a chance it will eventually be published or presented you must complete a Research Determination Form or IRB application.
Note 2 - "Research-like" activities conducted solely for pedagogical purposes (e.g. a class assignment) may not need IRB review and must meet all of the following conditions:
-the instructor’s intention is to teach professional research method such as interviewing, surveying or experimental desin
- the data are gathered solely for the purposes of teaching how to analyze them
-the results will remain in the classrom.
